Getting to know Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is a sovereign tribal nation in Prior Lake. The tribe is the largest employer in Scott County and its presence and generosity can be seen throughout the region. The tribe?s director of public safety and director of land and will give an overview of the tribe and answer your questions.
Speakers: Steve Albrecht & Greg Hayes
Steve Albrecht, P.E.
Steve currently works as Community Engineer/Land and Natural Resources Director for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC). In this role he is responsible for oversight of Engineering, Land Development and Natural Resources Management for the community and enterprise operations.
From 2011 to 2018 he served as Public Works Director for the City of Burnsville. In that role he was charged with leadership, budgeting and planning of the Public Works, Facilities, Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Divisions. Prior to coming to Burnsville, he served as Public Works Director/City Engineer for the City of Prior Lake from 2004 to 2011.
From 1994-2003 Steve worked as a consulting engineering for a variety of municipal clients in Carver, Scott, Dakota and Hennepin Counties. He has a degree in Agricultural-Water Resource Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and is a Licensed Civil Engineer in the State of Minnesota.
In his capacity as Public Works Director for Burnsville, he was involved with several committees and policy groups, including; APWA-MN as a Director, Transportation Advisory Board Technical Advisory Committee as Chair and is a member of Metro Cities and League of Minnesota Cities Legislative Committees.
Outside of work he teaches Junior Achievement at Glendale Elementary in Savage and is Vice President of the Prior Lake Soccer Club. He enjoys working as a volunteer goal keeper trainer, boating on Lake Minnetonka, and musky fishing.

Greg Hayes has served for 27 years within the Fire, EMS and Emergency Management field. Mr. Hayes is currently the Director of Public Safety for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Within his career, he has completed a number of deployments to disasters at the state and national levels. Additionally, Mr. Hayes speaks about tactical leadership and incident management planning and operations to groups across the country. He holds a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice and Homeland Security.
