Our History
Maxine Kruschke founded Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women in 1982 after leaving a 32-year marriage marred by domestic violence. Ms. Kruschke and a group of volunteers offered direct support to 5 victims of domestic violence out of her kitchen that first year. Since that time SVABW has grown its services, programs, advocacy and support and has assisted over 19,000 women and their children on their journey for a violence free, healthy family life.

Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women carries on Maxine Kruschke’s legacy and passion for working with victims of domestic violence, building awareness and educating the community with the audacious goal of ending domestic violence in Scott and Carver counties. Working with a committed Board of Directors and a talented staff, the SVAMN team continues to build partnerships with law enforcement, the legal community, social services, schools, faith communities, private enterprises, and individuals to directly support victims of domestic violence.
